The highlights of the events and festivals in the Val Gardena

The Val Gardena is known as one of the best ski areas in Europe. The majestic snow-capped peaks, the marvellous descents and a white winter landscape ensure a restful and vaired holiday.  Away from the natural wonders there are many events in the Val Garena which provide fun and entertainment.

FIS Skiworldcup, Saslong

14. – 15.12.2012

The Saslong in the Val Gardena is one of the most famous pistes in the world.  Every year in December the men’s Downhill and Super-G races are held here, with some of the world’s best skiers participating.   There are numerous stands with local food and musical entertainment which provide a fitting sideshow.

Snow sculpture competition in Selva

27.12.2012 to 30.12.2012

This year the annual snow sculpture competition in Selva has the theme “Alpine animals”.  Wonderful snow sculptures will give the centre of Selva a special shine.  The sculptors submit scale copies of their models in autumn, the best of these are chosen and carved in snow in the centre of Selva.  The prizegiving ceremony takes place on the spot on Sunday, 30th December at 4.30pm, with musical accompaniment from local musicians.  In suitable weather conditions the snow sculptures represent a particularly expressive backdrop for the tradition of the valley for locals and guests.

Night-Skijöring Race in Vallunga, Selva

The traditional Skijöring race takes place on 27th February 2013 at 4.30pm in Vallunga in Selva.  16 horses race for the 8 areas of Selva.  The Haflinger horses pull a skier along a circa 350m long course.

Gardenissima, the longest giant slalom in the world

The Gardenissima, surrounded by the unique scenery of the Dolomites, is now in its 16th year.  This ski race of superlatives has become one of the highlights of the Val Gardena winter season over the years and is not just a meeting place for sportsmen, where ski fans of all ages and abilities can measure themselves against top athletes, but also a huge ski party which is the crowning glory of the ski season.
